Crashing imply an error screen, with some numbers on screen to help developers understand what happened and fix it.
In your case, I think it doesn't "crash", it returns to/reloads the system menu.
when it's doing that, it means the loader couldn't find the game.
so, many possible reasons :
- verify the path to the game, the folder name, the file name. (/wbfs/Game Title here [TitleID6 here]/TitleID6.wbfs)
- verify the game's files (.wbfs) are not write protected
- verify they are good (use wii backup manager > option > sha1)
- in the loader, verify you are not using an individual setting for these games with an IOS slot different than the global option.
- maybe other possibilities, I'm not thinking about them right now.

I'm having a similar issue. I've got half a dozen old games that I installed last year that all run fine. in the past week, I've tried loading in three new games and two hang on black, and the third only boots about about 30 seconds of black. it's really strange. All my other games boot just fine, and I've been transferign them with Wii Backup Manager and verifying with SHA1 in the program after transfer that they're good, and that they play on dolphin, which they all do.

Oof, I think I found the problem.
--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------
1. Why isn't there a cIOS installed to slot 251 (unless you installed it somewhere else).
2. Outdated cIOSes.

I'm not sure why there isn't a 251. I have the HackMii installer, so if it didn't put it there on its own, I haven't messed around with it otherwise.
And yeah, no doubt some are outdated. I've had this Wii for a decade and I got into the hacking scene VERY early. Back when the only homebrew was crashing TP to play tetris off a gamecube-to-SD memory card adapter. So it can be hard to keep up with the hacks after 10 years x_x

I would recommend removing the old cIOSes and using a cIOS guide like wii.guide/cios for installing modern cIOSes. (Though, d2x v8 final are the same as d2x v10 beta52.)

I don't know how to install old ones, or which old ones to uninstall. Is it really important to uninstall them? Sounds dangerous...
Yeah, I just found that cIOS guide. Was the 3DS guide the first of it's kind? I feel like all my consoles now have a near identical web-based setup guide. modern technology is so great, and so is the modding community for putting these guides together. Oh, and thanks to you as well for helping me diagnose this issue!

You're welcome. Also, if you were wondering which one's to remove, it's the "hermes" one. (Though really it's any cIOS under 249.)

Now I have a different problem. I moved the d2x folder to my SD card and booted it up, but I can't change to v10 beta 52. I double checked and that v10 folder is DEFINITELY there on the SD card. My only options are v4, v5, and v6.
man, if it ain't one thing it's another.

@TidusWulf What? Are you using the d2x cIOS installer?

yes. this one here: https://wii.guide/cios
--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------
I restarted HBC and I get this error:
"Unable to get the module DIPP for the v10 beta52 d2x-v10-beta52 cIOS base 37" when trying to boot the d2x installer. so now I don't even have the options of v4, v6, etc.

d2x v8 isn't outdated and there's almost no need for a cIOS based on IOS 58.
Cyan's d2x pack works well but I don't see anything you should need to reinstall.
There's also no need to remove the Hermes IOSes. They aren't used unless you tell a loader to use them.

Well, this d2x installer is giving me major issues anyway. I moved some folders around and got d2x installer to boot into the menu, but I can't select the cIOS version I want to use. it's simply not an option now. Also, when I tried to install with v10, 56, and 249, it gave me a version error and failed as soon as I started.

I'm wonderign if I should just reformat my Wii and hack it from scratch...

Reformatting won't help. Are you using the pack that Cyan made that I linked?
To be clear, based on your SysCheck report you do not need to change your cIOSes at all. They are fine.

what are you talking about?
you act as if you never knew how the console worked.
unused slots are not "missing" firmwares.
the loader only use ONE IOS at a time, and it's usually the one in slot 249.
having, or not having, any other IOS slot is completely irrelevant to compatibility. and it's the same with their base or version of all unloaded slots.
I suggest you read the guide I'm writing here to learn how the console and homebrew are working: https://gbatemp.net/threads/wii-hacking-explained.501605/
specifically from the chapter1/IOS section.
try not to suggest wrong things to users, you'll make them do unneeded or even useless changes, but more importantly you'll make them think they have a problem and they need to worry about it, while they don't.
people who want to use USBLoaders only need ONE, and not more, cIOS. usually, v8 base57 is all you need. nothing more.

Sorry, I'm not great when it comes to support.
