Back support belts

Was wondering about lower back support/kidney belts. Do they really help with back comfort on long trips?

How do you know the thing fits? There are diff sizes and stuff. I experimented a while with one and didn't notice a diff... ?
Is there a major diff in quality / result between models and brands?

That's realy a strange thing. Where I live, Switzerland, the first thing you do after you decided to ride a bike (after you bought the bike and a helmet) is to get a kidney belt usualy, it's just normal. Speaking to peopele from UK, some of em don't even know what it is for, most are saying: useless. Seems to be some kind of religious thing...

I'm certainly not a doctor (only personal riding expiriences) but the kidney belt is saving your kindneys from vibrations on long term trips, saving yourself from unpleasant pain. It's easy, if you have have problems with it -> try it.

And there is another very important option: back protectors with integrated kidney belt (or the other way round). I know a few riders who would be dead or paralyzed without it :-( .They're uncomfortable the first time you wear it and you have to get used of it. Me personaly I feel naked on the bike w/o a kidney belt and a back protector nowadays.

Save rides, Kudi

Thanks for the advice. Think buying a belt is the way to go. Found this site while looking. They seem to offer a good range and free p&p over £20 (€30.50):

I have used a kidney belt for years, I found it invalauble when I had a tumble in Germany a few years ago and ended up with two broken ribs. I rode the bike (ZX10) home to the Isle of Man and found that the belt helped contain all the loose bits inside of me, I wore it even when not on the bike and it certainly made me more able to cope with the pain. No problem as regards size, find one with velcro and elastic and it allows for seasonal fluctuations in your Back support belts - Horizons Unlimited (27) belly!

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
